Create your first menu

Once you’ve decided on the structure of your menu, you’re ready to start building your chat service on Turn.io. This is the fun part! 

  1. Step 1: Log in to your Turn.io account.
  2. Step 2: Navigate to the “Content” tab on the left-hand side.
  3. Step 3: Click on the “Add content” button top right.
  4. Step 4: In the box that pops up, you’ll now be able to add your main menu:
  • You can use “0. Menu” as the title for the menu.
  • Add your list of content categories in the content section. 
  • Assign a unique identifier (i.e. a number, emoji and/or a keyword) to each category.
  • Add an instruction such as “Type a number to navigate” or “Click on an emoji to explore topics” at the bottom or the top of the menu.
  • Select the language in which your menu has been written from the dropdown list.
  • Click “Add content”.
  1. Step 5: Once you have a main menu in place, you can start adding the content that falls under each category. You’ll be adding all your content in the same way as describe in our how to load content article. 
A few tips:
  • Make sure the title of each piece of content starts with the number, emoji or keyword your users will use to navigate to it. The rest of the title should correspond to the message. This will help you to search for this piece of content again in Turn.io. 
  • Add a title in the body of the message to give your users a clear idea of where they are when they receive the message (e.g. “Latest news”).
  • Keep messages short and punchy. Steer clear of big blocks of text, don’t be afraid to add emojis, and use formatting to make the content easy to scan and read. 
  • Always remind your users how to get back to the main menu and other sections of your chat service. On the WHO example, you’ll notice they used two pin emojis to highlight their menu prompts: 
  • Remember that you’ll have to assign a language to your message before you can save it.

Load only a few messages to get a feel for things; then hop over to our article on how to set up basic automations. You’ll have to learn how to use this function before your chat service will kick into gear!
