The available action types

Once you've selected the trigger that will start an automation, you'll be prompted to select the action it should result in. Let's explore the different action types.

Use our step-by-step guide to learn everything you need to know about setting up basic automations or more advanced automations.

Once you've defined the trigger that will kick off an automation, you'll be prompted to select the action it should result in. In this article, we take a closer look at the types of actions you can use.

1. Reply with a message

This action will result in a preloaded piece of content being sent to your user. If you click through to the next step, you’ll notice that you can search for the message you’d like to use or add a new message.

2. Update a field on a contact's profile

With this option, you can automatically update a user's profile information. When you click through to the next step, you can specify the profile field and the value to be updated. You can automatically update a user’s name, surname, language and/or whether they’ve opted-in to your chat service.

3. Call a webhook

This action allows you to send the message to an external, third-party system or have the external system claim a conversation for a few minutes. The message will be sent straight to this system without you having to intervene.

Turn.io makes it possible to add multiple triggers and actions to chat-service messages to deliver highly personalised conversations. Learn how to do this, step-by-step, in our advanced automation article.

4. Set a follow-up timer

This action kicks off a timer since a defined event.

It allows you to start a timer once a user responds with a specific message and then once the timer is completed you can instruct Turn.io to execute another action, like sending the user a reminder message. The timer is limited to 23 hours since the defined event to remain within the 24 hour session window that WhatsApp dictates. This way you don't need to use (and pay for) a template message.

We have a great article on how to setup a follow-up timer to show you this action in action (😉).

5. Cancel a follow-up timer

Because you can set a follow-up timer you can also cancel a follow-up timer.
